What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session: 5 Easy Tips for Picture-Perfect Outfits
One of the most common questions I get before a family session is this:
“How do I dress everyone so we all look good together?”
And I totally get it. Picking outfits that coordinate (but don’t match exactly), fit everyone comfortably and still reflect your style? That’s no small task. But don’t worry I’ve got your back. Here are five easy, stress-busting tips to help you choose what to wear for your family portraits.
1. Dress for the Weather and the Location
If your session is in the fall, make sure everyone’s cozy and warm and not just one or two of you. If it’s a summer evening shoot in Franklin County, think breezy and breathable. When everyone’s dressed for the same environment your photos feel more connected and natural.
2. Pick a Color Palette (and Stick to It)
Choose 3–4 colors to build your family’s outfits around. Not everyone needs to wear the same color but coordinating tones makes your photos look polished without being too “matchy-matchy.”
🍂 Example: In a fall session, the ladies might wear soft blues while the guys go with warm olive greens.
🎄 Holiday session? Think one shade of red for the girls, a deeper red with touches of black or gray for the guys.
3. Skip the Logos and Loud Graphics
Shirts with logos, characters or big text can be distracting and once you notice them, you can’t un-notice them. Keep it simple and classic to make sure the focus stays on your faces and connections.
4. Make Sure the Kids’ Clothes Fit Just Right
This one’s big. If their clothes are too tight, they’ll be squirming. Too loose? They’ll be tripping and tugging and possibly dirty before we even start! Choose outfits that fit well and let them move comfortably.
5. Layers and Textures Are Your Best Friends
A layered look adds depth without relying on big bulky coats. Think cardigans, chunky scarves, denim jackets and corduroy vests, items that keep everyone warm and stylish without hiding their outfits.
