How I Got Started in Photography (And Why I Still Love It)
I didn’t set out to become a photographer. It all started with coaching my kids’ sports teams here in Rocky Mount, VA. What began as a way to help families get affordable, quality team pictures grew into something bigger. Now I help seniors, families and athletes across Franklin County tell their stories through easy, relaxed portraits they’re proud to share.
Hey there!
If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you want to know a little more about me and how I ended up behind the camera. So here’s my story…
The Very Beginning
I first got interested in photography about 15 years ago. The problem? I had no idea where to start. Photography seemed overwhelming back then and honestly there are still days it feels that way! Every time I pick up my camera I’m still learning.
How Coaching Led Me to Photography
Before I ever thought about starting a business I spent a lot of time coaching my son’s basketball teams and my daughter’s softball teams. I noticed something: it was tough to find someone to take good team pictures and when I did they charged so much that hardly anyone on the team bought any photos.
That’s when I decided to give it a shot myself. I picked up a camera and tried my hand at team and individual sports photography. My goal from the very beginning was simple: provide great pictures at prices families could actually afford.
Learning the Hard Way (and Laughing About It Now)
I’ll be the first to admit those early photos weren’t exactly award-winning. One time, I thought I had lighting all figured out and placed a light underneath and to the left of the kids during their session. Let’s just say… it didn’t turn out well. Those might still be the worst pictures I’ve ever taken. But I learned what not to do and that lesson stuck.
Branching Out: Senior Portraits and Families
As my skills improved I wanted to try something new - senior portraits. My first senior session was in Beckley, West Virginia, with Courtney. She was awesome to work with because she knew exactly what kind of photos she wanted and had ideas for her poses. Honestly she made my job easy and I’ll always be grateful to her for that.
Since then I’ve photographed about 30 seniors, from high school to college grads. In between those sessions I’ve also had the chance to photograph several amazing families.
Always Learning, Always Improving
I’m constantly learning new things about my camera, about editing and about how to make every session better. I recently added a new 85mm prime lens to my gear to help with all my portrait sessions. I shoot entirely in manual mode and adjust my settings on the fly. I also shoot in RAW so I have more control during editing making sure your final images look their absolute best.
Looking Ahead
One of my goals this fall is to dive head first into dramatic sports photography. I want to give my clients images that really pop - something different, something bold and something they’ll be excited to show everyone and hang on their wall.
That’s My Story—Now Let’s Tell Yours
That’s a little glimpse into how I got started and why I love what I do. I truly enjoy photographing people whether it’s for sports, seniors or families and I’d love the chance to work with you too.
